Introduction to Alternative Energy Technologies (IEST-001)
This workshop takes a broad look at today's most popular alternative energy technologies, as well as how you can incorporate them into your home or business. These technologies include solar (photovoltaic (PV) and thermal), wind, geothermal, micro-hydro, biomass, and biogas. The course runs for a total length of 40 hours, and will include one or more field trips on one/both of the Saturday classes. RETScreen Introductory Workshop
The award-winning RETScreen® Clean Energy Project Analysis Software is a unique decision support tool developed by Natural Resources Canada with the contribution of experts from government, industry, and academia. It is available for download free of charge, and is used by more than 200,000 people around the world. Apart from assessing energy technology options, the software can simultaneously analyze greenhouse gas impact, project financing and risk. Registration is open for these workshops for the following Saturday dates: September 18, 2010 and November 20, 2010. Advanced RETScreen Workshop for Solar Photovoltaic Systems
Look out for the first Advanced RETScreen Workshop for Solar Photovoltaic Systems planned for October 23, 2010. This advanced RETScreen course will explore various examples ranging from grid-connected micro FIT and FIT projects to off-grid projects with storage. In addition to looking at parameters affecting energy performance, a large portion of the course will also focus on financial modeling, including multiple funding scenarios, incentives, tax laws and other important variables. A working knowledge of RETScreen is preferred, though a brief review will be provided at the beginning. The cost of this workshop is $345 plus tax. Hands-on Solar Energy Workshop (IEST-002)
This workshop is currently being redesigned to meet certification standards established by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners. Hands-on Wind Energy Workshop (IEST-003)
A 3 week accelerated workshop designed for anyone interested in the installation, repair and maintenance of small residential/commercial wind power systems. This course will cover the background and theory of wind energy conversion, low to high power system varieties, typical applications, wind monitoring technologies, energy storage, and electrical grid interface connection methods. Tower, blade and power conversion design, manufacturing, installation and servicing will also be covered. The cost of this workshop is $595, plus a $100 materials/lab fee. Please note that the start date for the next section of this workshop is dependent on enrolment.
