Helping students with a Learning Disability

Centennial College has been provided with funding to develop “Enhanced Services” for students with Learning Disabilities from the Learning Opportunities Task Force (LOTF). This funding has enabled the CSD to develop a new retention and success model called the AIMS-LD, which stands for the Academic and Improvement and Monitoring Services for Students with a Learning Disabilities. AIMS includes academic monitoring, etc. AIMS-LD was developed by Lynda Kingsland and Irene Volinets, Centennial College and Sandra Hornby, Sheridan College, in association with the Learning Opportunities Task Force, Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

What is AIMS-LD?

Students have the opportunity to work individually with our Learning Strategists and Assistive Technologist to develop strategies that help them to navigate around their learning disability. The aim is to give students the tools they need to take charge of their learning and be better able to demonstrate academic competency in their courses. Sessions are held individually or in a group setting, you have the choice of deciding which format worked for you the best.

Who is eligible to participate in the AIMS-LD service?

Students with a diagnosed Learning Disabilities who wish to participate in this new retention and success program.

How does it work?

This plan focuses on:

  1. Are you aware of your disability, do you know what your strengths and weaknesses are?
  2. Do you know how your disability gets in the way academically?
  3. Are you able to identify and negotiate academic accommodations?
  4. Can you identify strategies for success?
  5. Are you able to use Adaptive Technology to demonstrate competence?
