Nursing Programs
Your Advantage This program prepares students for whom English is an additional language for post-secondary health programs where English fluency (reading, writing, listening and speaking) is a professional requirement for safe practice. Students have the unique opportunity to enhance communication skills necessary for the development of professional relationships within the workplace and also learn the health terminology utilized within Canadian health care settings. This innovative program is designed to increase students’ success when they enter their program of choice. It is taught by faculty members who have expertise in both health concepts and teaching English as an additional language and is focused on active participation learning activities that emphasize development of English communication skills but which are based upon core curriculum topics common to various health programs. Graduates of this program are well-prepared to undertake the challenges of a number of post-secondary health care programs. | Career Outlook | Careers in health care are both highly satisfying and well-paid. There is continued and strong demand for various health care professionals. However, many health care careers have significant English language fluency requirements. Students who successfully complete the Health Foundations program are uniquely qualified to continue with Centennial's health programs including Practical Nursing, Pharmacy Technician, Practical Nursing Certificate to Diploma and Bridging to University Nursing programs. | Your Commitment | This is a two semester full time program which provides students with the opportunity to understand and apply foundational concepts and to develop basic skills for success in health programs. The program features a highly interactive course that examines the basic anatomy and physiology of body systems providing one credit towards most health programs. Students will develop knowledge, skill and attitudes required for effective communication among professionals within the health care setting that includes the use of relevant health terminology and development of intermediate writing proficiency.
