Nursing Programs
Your Advantage Centennial Personal Support Workers are frontline healthcare professionals who make it possible for people who need support in their daily living activities to maintain their independence. They provide direct client care in a variety of settings from home care to long term care facilities. They are trained to assist people with Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, developmental delays and mental health issues and are skilled in recognizing signs of abuse, elderly illnesses and how to proactively respond to the needs of cancer patients. Centennial’s award-winning Personal Support Worker program trains and prepares you to help people live active and fulfilling lives. Benefit from hands-on learning with experienced faculty, student mentoring and develop the interpersonal and teamwork skills needed to respond effectively to client’s needs. Your training and certification as a Personal Support Worker is also a gateway to other health care fields. Our program has Ministry-approved vocational standards which will help you stand out as a highly qualified candidate for employment. Students entering the program in January will complete their program in August. | Career Outlook With a new emphasis on non-institutional care, the demand for trained Personal Support Workers is increasing. Graduates of our program are employed in hospitals, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, community agencies, private duty and homecare, and school systems with behaviourally and developmentally challenged children. Employers of our graduates include William Osler School, Nesbit Lodge, Leisureworld, Alexis Lodge, Rouge Valley and Sheppard Terrace. Placement agencies call our program to hire graduates. Hourly wages range from $12 to $30.00/hr. | Your Commitment This is offered as either a two semester (one year) full time program, or four semester part time program offered in the evening and weekends. Learn practical skills in personal and home management and receive instruction in nutrition and menu design. Weekly labs provide hands-on opportunity to practice new skills. Field placements in both semesters – community placement in semester one, long term facilities in semester two – provide you with valuable practical experience where the training you receive reflects the latest practices in the field. Costs for the full time program are approximately $1600 each semester including books and other costs. | Our Commitment to You Centennial will afford you every opportunity to transform your motivation, effort and willingness to learn into a satisfying career where you are able to make a difference in people's lives. At every point along the way you have access to the knowledge, expertise and personalized attention that will allow you to become a true helping professional in your chosen area. We are also committed to providing you the support to learn and work effectively within today's diverse cultural and social environment.
