Welcome to Centennial College’s first Healthy Active Living Program (HALP)!

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” so the saying goes. We all know that eating more vegetables and getting some exercise will do your body well. It’s no secret that your health matters, and you know you should probably choose an apple over that donut at 3:00 PM. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in North America “Chronic diseases and conditions—such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and arthritis—are among the most common, costly, and preventable of all health problems.” (2014). Lifestyle is one of the biggest predictors of longevity and overall wellness, both physical and mental. What most people don’t understand is that maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise has to be part of your lifestyle. We’re here to help.

HALP is an eight week pilot program. Thirty students and thirty staff and faculty can apply to participate. Upon registration, you will pay a deposit of $10 and receive a MisFit activity tracking device and a welcome package. The package will include nutrition guidelines, physical activity guidelines, sleep guidelines, stress management tips, and on-campus resources to help you live a healthy active lifestyle. For information on how to track your activity and use the MisFit, please visit the MisFit website. Upon syncing your device to be tracked, you will have the ability to set daily activity goals via a point system that is entirely determined by you. You will also be able to join communities of people with similar activity interests like running, or cycling. At the end of the program, you will have between Friday, August 14 to Friday August 21 to either keep your device for the $10 deposit, or return it to Athletics with the data erased, and receive your $10 back, and complete a feedback and post evaluation survey.
