1. What is Field Placement? Answer: Field Placement (PB290) is a course of study during which qualified students work fulltime as interns for six weeks with a local publisher. Students must complete this course to earn their post-graduate certificate. Field Placement takes place during the final six weeks of the Book & Magazine Publishing program. In addition to the Field Placement supervisor, a faculty member assigned to PB-290 will monitor a student's progress in the course. As with all courses, students earn a letter grade at the end. The grade is based on feedback from their placement supervisor. 2. What are the benefits of taking Field Placement? • Students gain valuable hands-on experience with a publisher or related organization. • Students learn what it's actually like to work in a business environment that demands consistently meeting deadlines, being punctual, contributing ideas and producing work that meets employer's demands • Students acquire new pieces for their professional portfolios -making them much more marketable • Students begin building their networks of helpful industry contacts • Occasionally, a Field Placement results in contract work or a fulltime job 3. What credits or courses do I need in order to be eligible for Field Placement? Answer: Students must successfully pass all program courses prior to PB-290 to be eligible for Field Placement. 4. How do I register for placement? Answer: Field placement is included as a course in your second semester. When Web-registration opens for your second semester, be sure to visit myCentennial and build your timetable then verify that field placement is listed as one of your courses. If you do not register for placement, you will not be allowed to report to your agency. 5. Why do I pay for field placement? Answer: Your field placement hours are part of your program and contribute to the mandatory hours required to complete your program, as approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities. Payment for your entire program is distributed over the number of semesters you attend. Mandatory non-tuition fees are also included in your fees for placement semester. These fees are reviewed and approved each new academic year by several committees and your Student Association. During your field placement you are still considered a student of Centennial College with all associated privileges and responsibilities. You will have access to the campus computer labs, college libraries and your Workers' Compensation is covered by the college 6. Will I be paid while on placement? Answer: Field Placement is part of your final semester term, during which you apply your skills, without pay, in a professional environment. 7. Will the program find me a Field Placement? Answer: The Co-ordinator of the Book & Magazine Publishing program, with assistance from other faculty, reaches out to many industry contacts to generate a list of potential Field Placement internships. Students then work with the Co-ordinator to try to match them with placements from this list. However, the initial list of placements may not suit all of students. So, we encourage students to investigate other potential internships, especially in magazines. While doing so, they must work closely with program faculty to avoid duplication. Students receive ample amounts of guidance, direction and advice during the Field Placement selection process. 8. If not, how will I get a Field Placement? Answer: Field Placement (PB-290) is a requirement of the Book & Magazine Publishing program. Students must complete this course to receive their post-graduate certificate. They work closely with the Co-ordinator to secure their internships. All students will ultimately, be matched with an organization. |
