Centennial College Kicks off Specialty Program in Sports Journalism Toronto, February 28, 2008 – Responding to new opportunities in an ever-expanding sports media universe, Centennial College is launching Canada’s first comprehensive sports journalism program. Students will be immersed in all forms of sports media including print, broadcast, online and multimedia reporting in one intensive year. “Journalism programs in Canada have ignored sports to a large degree,” says Malcolm Kelly, coordinator of the program and a well-known sports reporter and author. “Sports reporting goes beyond the box scores to convey the context, the culture and the history of the athletes and their accomplishments.” Prospective sports journalists will gain essential skills and knowledge, including interviewing, beat reporting, sports history and culture, the business of sports, statistics and sports imaging, plus will gain the ability to meet the multi-platform demands put on young reporters today. Students will learn in a diverse, gender-inclusive environment surrounded by others as dedicated to sports journalism as they are. Students will be assigned to a six-week job placement as part of their program, working at a Toronto-area sports media outlet. “As a large media market with four major-league sports franchises, Toronto is the best city in Canada in which to practice the craft,” Kelly says. Centennial has amassed an impressive roster of sports journalists and personalities – including Scott Russell, Karen Sebesta, Dick Howard, Gerry Dobson, Scott Morrison and more – who advise on the specialized curriculum to ensure the courses are relevant. Kelly says the program will be careful not to overemphasize popular sports such as hockey and football, to the detriment of world sports such as soccer and cricket. Other lessons include the ethics of sports journalism and the legalities of reporting. The graduate certificate program is open to university and college grads with journalism or non-journalism backgrounds, or who have worked in a related field. Centennial is taking applications now for the January 2009 start date at its mid-Toronto location, The Centre for Creative Communications, a leading-edge media education campus with programs in art and design, journalism, advertising, public relations, publishing and integrated media. - 30 -
