Creating the NEXT wave of Mobile Games
By Paul Koidis For Daniel Yu, co-creator of the iPod / iPhone Touch game 7 Cities TD, developing ground-breaking new games for a revolutionary technology seems simply like a natural outcome of a lifelong passion. "I've been gaming since I was a kid, and I've always been interested in new media," says Yu, a recent graduate of the UTSC / Centennial College Joint New Media program. "So, when Ayngaran (co-developer) and I were looking for the next gaming platform to develop on, we went through quite a few including PC, Nintendo DS, among others." "We watched the iPhone closely for awhile and decided to just go for it," Yu says. 7 Cities TD is a Tower Defense game designed for the iPod and iPhone Touch, which has been receiving rave reviews from critics, industry and gamers, alike. So-called Tower Defense games have become a popular genre of flash games on the internet and new ones seem to be popping up all the time. But this one stands out. With rich visuals, a polished interface, deep game play and features not commonly found in other games, it marks what could be the next step for handheld games in this genre. |
Secrets to Success
Yu credits his time in the joint program as being helpful to his recent success. "The professors in the new media program helped lay the foundation by teaching me well," Yu says. "The most useful courses pertaining to game development covered interfaces, audio, video, and programming." And his advice for aspiring game developers? "Start by simply doing it," Yu says. "Even if the game is on pencil and paper, design and flesh it out as you want it to be. Have your friends play as well. This will be your starting point." "You could even design your own gaming machine."
