English Language Proficiency

For those impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19)

The current coronavirus outbreak has resulted in widespread English Proficiency test center closures in impacted regions. In response to this, Centennial College will accept Centennial College’s English Skills Assessment to demonstrate English proficiency for students applying to begin their studies in summer or fall semesters 2020.

Applicants may take Centennial College’s English Skills Assessment online.

Learn more about Centennial College’s response to coronavirus (COVID-19).

Anyone applying to Centennial College must demonstrate an acceptable level of English language proficiency in order to be considered for admission. Most post-secondary programs require applicants to meet a minimum academic English prerequisite of grade 12 English or an equivalent. Mature students who are unable to demonstrate success in grade 12 English may meet proficiency by writing the Centennial College Language Skills Assessment test for admission.

Post-graduate programs require applicants to successfully complete two consecutive full years of post-secondary education in Canada in English or in a school and country where English is the primary language of instruction and communication. Satisfactory academic progress must be demonstrated.

Applicants to the following programs must complete three consecutive full years of secondary or post-secondary education in Canada in English or in a school and country where English is the primary language of instruction and communication:

  • Medical Laboratory Technician
  • Pharmacy Technician*
  • Practical Nursing or Practical Nursing Flex
  • Workplace Wellness and Health Promotion

*The Pharmacy Technician program is accredited by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP). It is a requirement of accreditation that candidates whose first language is not English meet one of the benchmarks as outlined by National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA 2009).

Applicants whose first language is not English may meet English proficiency requirements by taking one of the following English Language proficiency tests. The assessment may involve reading, writing, speaking and listening. The minimum score required can differ depending on the program. The minimum scores acceptable are listed below:
