Social Action Fund
Centennial College is a leader in providing an educational experience that empowers students to become agents of social change on local and international levels. Centennial values and embraces diversity, equity and inclusion as fundamental to our mission to educate students for career success within a context of global citizenship and social justice (Statement of Diversity).
What is the Social Action Fund?
The purpose of Social Action Fund (SAF) is to fulfil the College’s commitment to addressing the "historical and persistent inequities and barriers to equitable participation [that] exist and are well documented in society and within the College" (Statement of Diversity). The SAF supports sustainable, tangible and goal-oriented social justice projects with measurable outcomes that encourage more equitable practices within the institution and/or the larger community, foster global citizenship and challenge systems of oppression. The SAF is designed to infuse equity and diversity into every aspect of the College’s work and operations by funding proposals for projects that address issues of equity and diversity, build capacity among College members and that facilitate movement from social analysis to civic action within the College or the broader community.
All College employees, as well as students working under the guidance of a staff member, are eligible to apply. Group proposals are encouraged. Funding of up to $2000 will be awarded to each successful proposal. Applicants are required to fill in the Social Action Fund application form through their respective Schools within the College.
Applicants may submit a proposal for funding for a reoccurring project up to 2 times; however, repeat applicants must indicate how continued funding will enhance their project from the previous time. Applicants must seek sustainable funding sources for on-going, long term, or reoccurring projects outside of the Social Action Fund. The Social Action Fund is primarily to encourage new ideas and opportunities in the College community. The Social Action Fund is a competition for which applications are reviewed and assessed by a College wide committee; therefore it cannot be a guaranteed source of funding for ongoing or repetitive projects.

Collaboration with GCEI on project conceptualization is part of the process for granting funds. The Project Liaison is the primary contact with GCEI.
Collaboration with GCEI involves the following:
- Ensuring the project builds capacity among Centennial College staff and students
- Working with GCEI staff to develop a Project Purchasing Plan
- Including GCEI in project marketing and communications, if applicable
- Submitting a final Project Report by August 15th 2020.
Project proposals should be designed to address issues of inequity and discrimination as they relate to historically disadvantaged groups, including inequities related to socio-economic status, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, abilities, gender, gender identity & expression, Indigenous groups, faith, language, country of origin, mental health and/or other parts of a person’s identity. Projects should provide measurable and observable benefits to the College community aligned with Centennial’s global citizenship education, equity and inclusion mandate, as well as have an ongoing impact on fostering inclusive learning, working and teaching environments. Funding may be used for activities such as hosting a guest speaker, planning an event, coordinating a training opportunity, launching a project, furthering research - be innovative!
The following areas will be rated on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest.

- Address issues of Global Citizenship, Education and Inclusion (GCEI) on a local and/or global level
- Focuses on intersecting/overlapping issues rooted in GCEI that will further develop an equitable and inclusive College community.
- Allows Centennial students and/or employees to take action through leadership roles and will further develop GCEI skills
- Furthers the College community’s understanding of issues related to Global Citizenship, Education and Inclusion, through education or research
- Has a clear potential create sustainable change for the College community with measurable goals
- Has a reasonable budget
- Engages multiple, internal stakeholders, industry and/or community partners outside the College
The Social Action Fund is not for the use of personal and/or group compensation, food, travel expenses, or merit projects. Funding will not be granted for projects that are a normal part of the unit’s responsibilities and operating expenses.
Every Voice Counts: Bridging the Gender Gap on Campus
Community Development Work student, Cristiani De Oliveira Dias, facilitated conversations on gender equity on Ashtonbee Campus. She hosted a lively event to celebrate International Women’s Day featuring spoken word and musical performances by Centennial College students as well as an insightful and impactful panel discussion with Centennial alumni Carlene Daley, Karen King and Shane Wallace.
Sustainable Menstruation Products
Cristiani De Oliveira Dias also raised awareness about sustainable menstruation products. She hosted tables at Progress and Ashtonbee Campuses with information about the environmental and health effects of disposable menstruation products and the benefits of sustainable, reusable products. She also had on display various menstrual cups, free-bleed underwear and washable pads. Students who participated in a trivia quiz were entered into a draw to win a prize package of sustainable products. Cristiani engaged with approximately 30 students, who all discussed the benefits of sustainable menstruation products and were both excited and eager to try the new products that they won.
Ashtonbee Community Garden Greenhouse Project
The Ashtonbee Community Garden Committee received a Social Action Fund to build a permanent greenhouse which will allow them to grow plants, fruits, vegetables and herbs year round. Once constructed, the greenhouse will stand as a symbol of the dependence we don't need on today's globally industrialized food systems. It will encourage the planting and growing of sustainable, healthy and local food.
2035 Refugee Film
A student-written screenplay, 2035 is a 15 minute dramatic film that explores how a refugee faces challenges while adjusting to life in Canada. The film is produced in partnership with the Centre for Immigrant and Community Services in Markham, Ontario as well as Centennial College’s School of Community Arts, Media and Design.
STRUT Fashion Show
From runway walks to performances to shared stories about body positivity, the STRUT Fashion Show encouraged inclusivity, addressed body shaming and promoted body positivity. It included over 45 diverse models, 250 audience members and several local fashion businesses.
Africentric March Break Camp
The Africentric Kids Camp engaged children of African backgrounds and those interested in learning about African history, culture and tradition. Through music, dance, arts and crafts, storytelling and many other educational pieces, children developed new skills and a deeper understanding of African cultures. The camp offered children a space where they could belong and develop positive ways to embrace who they are with pride.
LGBTQ2+ Health, Allyship and Resiliency Week
During LGBTQ2+ Health, Allyship and Resiliency Week, Morgan Charron and students engaged in both educational and recreational activities that brought visibility to the challenges and triumphs of the LGBTQ2+ community. Four events took place over the course of the week at each campus, including an HIV/AIDS and Sexual Education panel, arts and crafts fair, Sexual Assault and Violence Healing Strategies Workshop and a professional allyship panel targeted to Community and Health Studies students. These events brought together a diverse group of LGBTQ2+ community leaders and changemakers to both address the oppression faced by the LGBTQ2+ community and celebrate the community’s beauty and resiliency.
Whose Body is it Anyway?
In the wake of the #metoo and #TimesUp movement, student Carlene Daley organized a series of events at the Story Arts Centre and Ashtonbee campuses for students and staff to bring awareness to sexual violence and how we can build resources and tools to help women on campus and in their professional lives. The events were well attended with participants brainstorming a number of ways students can lead proactive engagement to address sexual violence.
Our Responsibility to Remember
Centennial Libraries, School of Advancement and GCEI hosted this event as part of the 36th annual Holocaust Education Week. This explored how artistic skills and new technologies are being used to carry forward the visual and auditory memories of survivors and victims of genocide. Also, students from GNED 500 classes presented and discussed their projects on this theme.
Everyday Law Project
The Centre for Legal and Administrative Studies and the Ontario Justice Education Network delivered a justice education project in two high schools in Scarborough. The project was meant to introduce youth to various areas of law and teach youth how to identify and analyze legal issues and cultivate advocacy skills. It highlighted a range of careers in law.
Living with Schizophrenia
Two speakers were invited to provide over 100 of our Police Foundations students a direct interaction with a community member who discussed their lived experience with the stigma and hardships surrounding race and mental health issues. Everett Barrett has lived with schizophrenia for most of his adult life, providing an important learning opportunity for potential law enforcement professionals.
Students in Mind
A one-day symposium headed by Program Coordinator, Sama Bassidji, that engaged students, staff and faculty in an open dialogue around mental health and mental illness. The objective was to mobilize participants in becoming leaders and advocates of mental health support and promotion.
