Winter 2020 Course Grading FAQs
Winter 2020 Course Grading FAQs
To change your grade to a Pass (P), you must have a passing grade according to your program and course policies. To change your grade, you must complete the Winter 2020 Online Pass (P) Grade Request form made available on myCentennial:
- Log in to your myCentennial student account.
- Select the “Student” menu (left side of the screen).
- Select “Student Records” to access the COVID-19 Pass Grade Request form.
- Complete the online form and submit.
The deadline to submit your Pass (P) grade change is Friday, May 15, 2020.
Opting for a P grade allows you to obtain credit for a course needed for graduation without impacting your GPA. A P grade signifies that you have met the minimum threshold to pass the course but does not specify your level of performance in the way a letter grade (A-D) does.
You must attain a GPA of 2.0 to meet graduation requirements. Some programs require a GPA higher than 2.0 to be eligible to graduate. Students seeking to work in fields that require certification or accreditation may need to maintain a certain GPA to satisfy professional body requirements. You may also have your own personal academic goals. If a grade you received in a course prevents you from maintaining a desired or required GPA, opting for a P grade may be beneficial to you.
If you have additional questions about whether a P grade is the best choice for you, please connect with your Success Advisor.
P grades may limit your options if you are looking to pursue further education, such as degree or graduate studies programs. A P grade may not be recognized for admission, eligibility for transfer pathways, or transfer credit.
There are some program-specific instances in which a P grade may not be beneficial to a student:
- Students in Pre-Health and Foundations programs should note that minimum grades in some courses are required to transfer to other Centennial programs.
- Students in General Arts and Liberal Arts programs should note that minimum grades are required for articulation into university partner programs.
- Students in Foundations programs (Technology/Hospitality/Community and Child Studies/Business/Trades/Health Studies and Communications Skills) require a minimum of a C grade in COMM162 to be exempt from taking COMM161 when entering a diploma program.
Students aspiring to enter regulated professions or fields that require accreditation may be required to attain minimum grades in all or certain courses to meet professional body requirements.
P grades may impact applications for or maintaining the requirements for scholarships or bursaries.
Please contact your Success Advisor if you have questions through our Advising Services Current Student webpage.
You may request a P grade if you have received a passing grade in course in the Winter 2020 semester. The passing grade in most cases is a D grade (50%), however, in some programs and courses a higher grade is required to pass. Courses requiring a grade higher than D to pass should be noted on your program model route. Please consult with your Success Advisor if you are uncertain about the grade requirement(s) for your program/courses.
Please note that some programs are ineligible for the P grade because of accreditation or regulatory body requirements. Students in these programs will not be permitted to request a P grade.
For accreditation and/or regulatory requirements some programs require students to have specific letter grades in order to demonstrate minimum levels of performance. P grades are not possible for courses in the following programs:
- Academic and Career Entrance
- Aviation Technician – Aircraft Maintenance (excluding Communications and General Education courses)
- Aviation Technician – Avionics Maintenance (excluding Communications and General Education courses)
- Aviation Technology – Aircraft Maintenance and Management (excluding Communications and General Education courses)
- Aviation Technology – Avionics Maintenance and Management (excluding Communications and General Education courses)
- Career and College Transition
- Massage Therapy
- Medical Laboratory Technician (excluding Communications and General Education courses)
- Nutrition and Food Service Management (excluding Communications and General Education courses)
- Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant (excluding Communications and General Education courses)
- Pharmacy Technician (excluding General Education courses)
If you have additional questions please contact your Success Advisor through our Advising Services Current Student webpage.
No, a P grade or WNP grade will not affect your OSAP.
However, if you do receive a WNP grade you will be required to provide a letter to the Student Financial Services office outlining the reason you received a WNP grade is due to COVID19. Supporting documentation will be requested.
No, these grades alone will not affect your study permit or PGWP. However, you must retake courses with WNP grades, which may lead to a study permit extension and/or part-time status and will impact your PGWP eligibility.
If you are submitting a formal grade appeal for an assignment, test, placement or exam grade, speak to your instructor first. You can still request a P grade at the end of the term if you have passed the course. Once final grades are released, you have the option of 1) submitting a grade appeal (talk to your instructor first) or 2) requesting a P grade. You cannot do both. For more information on appealing a grade visit What you need to know about appealing your grades.
If you submitted an appeal of your final grade without being aware of the option to request a P grade and would like to withdraw your appeal, please contact your Chair. Grades awarded as a result of a completed grade appeal process will stand.
No, your decision is not reversible. Please ensure you have considered all factors before making your decision. If you have additional questions about whether a P grade is the best choice for you, please connect with your Success Advisor.
