This course provides analytical tools to understand media theories, social change, economics and operations of the music industry and the effects of technological advancements on music and consumerism.

This course is designed to develop essential baking and pastry skills on the entry level. Through demonstration and skill development exercises the learner applies basic production principles and gains confidence working in the pastry environment. During the course students will produce a variety of pastries as well as develop the necessary skills required for the baking and pastry industry. Students will be introduced to the fundamental ingredients, techniques and procedures used in the Bakeshop from both a theoretical and practical perspective.

Course Description:
In Child and Youth Work practice, it is necessary to be aware of the continuum of typical development in order to better understand and assess any psychopathology and their manifestations in children and youth. This course will examine, identify, and describe child and adolescent development from a chronological perspective, beginning with conception through the periods of infancy, childhood and adolescence. Specifically, emphasis will be on the developmental tasks and needs in relation to physical, cognitive, moral and socio-emotional domains of holistic development. Emotional and behavioural difficulties that may arise due to interruptions during the typical developmental process will be examined.

This course is designed to introduce the learner to the theoretical and practical discipline of psychology. The goal of the course is to enable learners to view their lives and interactions from a psychological perspective, employing scientific methods and research information. We will explore the following sub-fields of psychology: biology, states of consciousness, learning, memory, motivation, personality, disorders, and treatment. We will view them through the lenses of the major perspectives of psychology: biological, psychodynamic, cognitive, behavioral and humanistic. Improving one’s well-being and social interaction will be part of our process, in class. This course will enable you to base your personal and world views more on scientific principles, rather than simple opinion.

Course Description:
In this general education course, students are introduced to the historical evolution and impact of video games. This class explores the origins and evolution of games, as well as the key historical figures that have been so influential to this industry. It also explores the impact video games have had on society as they become more firmly entrenched in our lives and our culture. Concepts explored in this course include: historical perspectives on the acceptance of video games, gaming cultures in different segments of society, the ethical considerations of designing, creating and marketing video games, the impact of new technologies on video gaming, representation of race, gender and sexuality in gaming, the effects of video games on the body and the mind, and the role of video games in the future. As part of this course, students will be required to reflect on these issues, discuss them with fellow students, and present a refined topic of their choosing to the class.

Through case studies, students will also develop their critical analysis skills by evaluating a number of topics and their relation to the criminal justice system such as mental health, addiction, youth crime, violence against women and psychopathy.

This course is designed to teach the students about the various laws that govern the work place and their rights and responsibilities as a worker in a shop environment. Students will be able to demonstrate how to correctly use various types of precision and non-precision tools. Students will be taught about the different types of bearings and seals and be able to perform recommended diagnostics and repairs procedure on them. Students will demonstrate the principles and purpose of heating and cutting tools. Students will be able to explain and identify the different types of Oxy – fuel heating and cutting equipment and perform basic heating and cutting procedures following recommended guideline.

This course will examine how identities shape and are shaped by the social relationships that we experience on a daily basis. Students will be asked to explore questions such as, “How do my interactions with my family and friends shape who I am?” and “How does being labeled a ‘youth’ influence how other people treat me?” This course will also investigate the history of issues such as sexism, racism, and classism, and how they are used by modern societies to control populations. Through reflection, discussion, and a range of class activities, students will learn how to critically analyze the impact that social factors have on their personal identity.
