Journalism is a business that is driven by the audience. Increasingly, editorial decisions are informed by audience behaviour. What story is attracting a large audience? Where is the audience coming from and how did they find it? Is it watching or reading the content, passively, or is it more engaged and sharing it? This course is designed to help students understand the importance of the news consumer in a business that is, not only digital first, but audience first. Students, through a variety of tools and techniques, including search and social optimization, will learn to track and understand audience behaviour and to explore the analytics that matter to editors, publishers and advertisers.
