Building Basic Language Skills: Listening

This course prepares students for the listening needs that they will have in college. Students are taught how to actively listen to a variety of academic listening texts on familiar topics so that they can acquire the most important information. Students learn aspects of the spoken English sound system that help them improve listening comprehension. They are also taught to attend to key words that guide listeners through short lectures, presentations, and conversations about familiar subjects. Information organization skills like effective note-taking and use of graphic organizers are taught. Students practice these skills through engaging activities individually, in pairs and in groups.
