Lab hours per week
Course Availability: Open
Description: This course provides students with an overview of management issues in culture and heritage facilities/sites related to exhibition planning, development; environmental and technical concerns in exhibition and collections management and public and educational outreach. Conjunct to the foregoing, education and interpretation in culture and heritage facilities/sites will be explored. The parallels and differences between museum, gallery and historic and heritage site contexts will also be examined. Learners will examine the critical role of interpretation and public programming/education in helping culture and heritage organizations to engage their communities in a meaningful and long-term way. Learners will explore how organizations create memorable learning experiences for visitors, develop community outreach approaches and plan for the delivery, staffing, management and evaluation of programs. Policy development, learning theory, communication and interpretative skills, and the methodology of program design will be covered using a variety of teaching techniques while providing hands-on learner experience in program planning and implementation. Learners thus explore and consider how museums and heritage organizations embrace learning as a valued outcome and develop effective, long-term community partnerships.
