Description: This course in the concepts of the Humanities is part of the General Arts and Science program at Centennial College. It is intended to assist college students to develop several articulate and informed concepts appropriate for observing, participating in and appraising work in the disciplines of the Humanities --history, philosophy, poetry, myth, theatre, fine arts, architecture, music and film. Both individually and in groups, oral discourse and written composition, students will observe, explore, participate in and evaluate works from the above-named disciplines; concomitantly, they will develop informed and articulate positions regarding the act of, the art of, and the consequences of "civilization". Emphasis is placed on historical and cultural context and on fundamental themes and questions present in all art, including the origins of those themes in humanity's first such efforts --especially freedom, passion, power, identity, goodness, reason, loneliness, cruelty, grief, loyalty, mask and gift.
