Essentials of Screening, Assessment and Case Management

Course Code AMHW-201
Lecture hours per week 2
Lab hours per week 2
Course Availability: Open
Description:

This course will identify the range of diverse service settings in which people with addiction and mental health issues present, and will examine reasons why the majority of people with addiction and mental health problems do not seek specialized treatment, and of those who do seek treatment, why many drop out prematurely, or “fall through the cracks” attempting to navigate multiple service systems. Based on a foundation model of trauma-informed care, students will use case-based simulations to apply commonly-used screening and assessment tools for addiction and mental health issues, and will critically reflect on the shortcomings of these tools among specific populations, including Canada’s indigenous peoples and culturally-specific groups. In the latter part of the course students will review and articulate a case management model that is client-centred and inclusive of family members/kin and interprofessional teams.
