This course provides students with a critical understanding of the links between international development and human rights in theory and practice including the “right to development”, focusing mostly on economic and social rights in addition to civil and political rights. Students examine international human rights principles and standards and those at regional, national and local levels, and how they are reflected in discussions and policies on trade and investment, foreign aid, poverty alleviation and environmental protection, as well as in mandates, programs and activities of international development organizations including the Millennium Development Goals.
