This course provides an integrated introduction to current networking technologies and protocols and their utilization in a contemporary business environment. It introduces learners to basic networking terminology and concepts and examines the evolving role of the IT professional and computer networks due to the fast changing computing needs and applications. The course presents the fundamentals of Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs). Two networking models - OSI and TCP/IP – and their architecture are examined and compared including the physical layer standards. The different types of cables and interconnecting devices (hubs, switches, routers) are also introduced and assessed. An emphasis is placed on the IEEE802.3 (Ethernet) standard as one of the most widely accepted and implemented networking standards for LANs, MANs and WANs. The fundamental concepts of WANs are introduced with the most popular protocols and technologies. The TCP/IP suite of protocols is also introduced with an emphasis on the Internet protocol (IPv4 and IPv6) standard and subnetting.
