This introductory course will familiarize Pharmacy Technician students with the pharmacology of medications related to community dispensing. Students will learn the pharmacological and therapeutic classifications of drugs according to the Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties. A group assignment based on a case study which will include: dosing, contraindications, adverse effects, warning labels, safety issues, devices, and MedsCheck. Discussion of Health Canada prescription and non-prescription drugs, vitamins, natural health products and diagnostic and monitoring devices will be linked to the medical conditions in relation to community practice. Differentiation of community and hospital dispensing will be introduced. 

Students will be expected to employ their skills in the use of specific pharmaceutical references, specifically the course textbook, the Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties and Ontario Drug Benefit Formulary. Memory and retention will be necessary for drug name, therapeutic classification and therapeutic area review for tests, exams and assignment completion.
