Centennial College and SETAS offer students well-equipped, high-tech laboratories in which to study as they master the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the marketplace. Below are some of the many facilities and resources students will use as part of their education.
Applied Electronics Laboratory, Room A3-56
Senior students use a variety of electronics application software (MATLAB, LabVIEW, MultiSIM), as well as test and measurement equipment such as advanced oscilloscopes, precision measurement bridges, distortion analyzers and computer-based automated testing equipment to:
- Apply the programming concepts they have learned in earlier courses.
- Implement advanced application tasks in design, simulation, assembly and testing of electronic circuits and systems such as A/D and D/A converters, power devices and amplifiers, sequential digital circuits and control systems.
- Work in a project development environment using PCB (printed circuit board) design software, automated PCB fabrication machines, and several fully-equipped soldering workstations.
Basic Electronics Laboratory, Room D1-21
Students work in teams of two to learn how to:
- Build, test and troubleshoot electrical and electronic circuits.
- Prototype a circuit on a breadboard.
- Solder components on a printed circuit board.
- Operate basic instrumentation such as power supplies, multimeters, oscilloscopes, function generators and bench transformers.
- Use computer-based tools for electronic circuit schematic drawing, simulation, analysis and testing.
Biomedical Laboratory, Room A3-52
The laboratory provides student with an appropriate environment to understand the origin, acquisition and processing of biosignals, understand biomedical instrumentation systems, perform biomedical instrument networking, relate relevant standards and perform basic risk assessment. Students learn to:
- Understand the standards needed to calibrate and carry out preventive maintenance.
- Use state of the art electro physiological equipment to understand biosignals.
- Follow biomedical instruments and to troubleshoot to both level and repair electro-surgical units, infusion pumps, lasers, ECG, defibrillators, dialysis machines, ventilators, anesthesia machines, patient monitors and infant incubators.
- Understand basic infection control, transport of dangerous goods, WHMIS and biosafety protocols.
- Network biomedical instruments.
Computer Engineering Laboratory, Room D1-22
Students work in teams of two to learn how to:
- Build, test and troubleshoot digital electronic circuits, microcontroller systems, interfacing analog-digital, and embedded systems.
- Prototype digital integrated circuits on a breadboard.
- Program Altera and Xilinx programmable logic devices (PLDs), MC68HC11 and PIC microcontroller units in Assembler and C.
- Develop real-time system-on-chip.
- Implement a combination of computer-based tools interfacing with external digital units that participate in real life analog measurements and activation.
Data Centre Laboratory, Room A3-32
Students have access to this data centre's equipment and facilities, including servers, switches and backup engines, on which they learn:
- Operation, configuration and troubleshooting of various data centre technologies.
- Installation, configuration and troubleshooting of virtual servers and data storage solutions.
- Design and implementation of backup solutions.
Data Communications Laboratory, Room A3-65
Students have access to signal generation, modulation and measurement equipment, on which they learn:
- Analyzing commonly-used signals in communication systems in both time and frequency domain.
- Analyzing signals generated by different modulation and multiplexing techniques.
- The operation and protocols of data link and network layers.
This lab provides LabVolt modular communication systems that are widely implemented in civilian and military radio communication education. Students:
- Explore how the information signal is transmitted and received in the AM/SSB/FM communication systems as well as in the ASK/FSK/PSK data communication systems.
- Test Ethernet computer network at the physical layer with oscilloscopes and at data link layer with software application Wireshark.
Enterprise Networking Laboratories, Room A3-22, A3-24 and A3-26
Students have access to Switches, Routers, ADTRAN WAN emulators and Network Management servers (NMS), on which they learn:
- Installation and configuration of Switches to build Local Area Networks and VLANs.
- Installation and configuration of Routers and Routing protocols to build internet works.
- Installation and configuration of routers and ADTRAM WAN emulators to build Wide Area Networks.
- Design and testing of enterprise-level networks, consisting of multi-vendor switching and routing internetworking devices.
- Hands-on experience using SNMPc, SolarWinds, HP OpenView packages and Fluke OptiView Workgroup Analyzer Network.
Network Operating Systems Laboratories, Room A3-21 and A3-23
Students have access to professional server hardware, on which they learn:
- Installation, configuration and management of various servers and client operating systems.
- Window, Linux and Unix operating systems.
- Configuration of servers and clients for secure environments.
- Installation, configuration and troubleshooting of different services like web servers, email services and database services.
PC Hardware Laboratory, Room A3-61
Students have access to PCs and laptops, on which they will learn:
- Installation, configuration, and maintaining motherboard, CPU, memory, hard disks and I/O devices.
- Supporting, upgrading, troubleshooting and assembling PCs.
- Supporting, upgrading and troubleshooting notebooks.
RF and Wireless Technology Laboratory, Room A3-63
Students have access to signal generators and different types of antennae, access points and test equipment. Students learn to:
- Integrate, test and repair wireless systems.
- Evaluate and apply the characteristics of wireline transmission lines and wireless antennae to practical tasks.
- Use parameters and technical specifications in the RF field to calculate and measure with spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes and communication analyzers.
- Design, install and configure WPAN, WLAN, Cellular and Broadband wireless systems.
- Analyze AM and FM as analog modulations and DPSK and QAM as digital modulations.
- Observe and analyze real life radio and television broadcasts.
- Install, test, and troubleshoot computer wireless networks in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth systems.
- Set-up and analyze advanced communication systems with cellular telephone and Wi-Max communication equipment.
Software Engineering Laboratories
Rooms A3-11, A3-13, A3-15, A3-17
Students have access to professional desktop and mobile software, on which they will learn:
- Web application development tools such as Visual Studio 2010, Microsoft Expression 4 and Adobe CS5.
- Web server software such as Apache Tomcat and IIS.
- Programming language IDEs, such as Visual Studio 2010, Rational Application Developer 8, Eclipse Classic 4.2 with Android Plug-in and Eclipse for Java EE.
- Java Software (JSDK 7).
- MS-SQL Server 2008 R2, Oracle Developer Suite 10G R2 and MS-ACCESS 2007/2010.
- Windows 7 and Linux (Fedora) operating systems.
- Gaming frameworks such as XNA 4 and Adobe Flash.
- Visual modeling tools such as Visual Paradigm and Visio 2010.
- Project management software (Microsoft Project).
Telecommunications Laboratory, Room A3-55
Students have access to Private Branch Exchange (PBX) and Voice over IP (VoIP) switches and telephone sets, on which they will learn:
- Designing and installation wiring for home, PBX and central office.
- Operation of PBX.
- Configuration and administration of Voice over IP (VoIP) equipment.
- Internet protocol telephony operations and examining influencing factors.
- Installation and configuration of IP-based data/voice/video communication equipment.
- Testing of key parameters of IP-based data/voice/video communication system.
- Configuration and maintenance of small and medium business telephone systems.
