Break into the Public Relations industry with Centennial College

Every modern company, event or organizations needs a personal brand to survive, and professional communicators to spread that brand, so the world will take notice of what they have to offer. Centennial College's Public Relations and Corporate Communications program can make you that communicator, and enhance your skills with practical, portfolio-building learning opportunities.

A modern professional communicator has to do a lot of different things, so you learn a variety of skills, including writing, social media, event planning, budgeting and presentation skills. More importantly, it gives you a chance to show these skills off, thanks to a special project that occurs every year that can be used as a portfolio piece, as well as giving you a chance to do something meaningful.

Practical experience

Each year at the college, Public Relations Toronto students participate in a special project that lets them put the media skills they've learned to the test in a real setting that will give them portfolio content, as well as allow them to contribute to social good. This is done through Project Fusion, an annual collaboration between media students that aims to create an event to highlight and promote an important social issue. The events are conceived and executed by Centennial College students, including P.R. ones, who take on planning and executing the details, including food, drinks and music, among other things. There's also a goal to secure funding, and develop Toronto media coverage, something that a future PR professional will be required to do.

An example

In 2016, Public Relations focused on mental health in the workplace as its issue. The final event was called Up All Night, a 24-hour event at the Story Arts Centre. The all-nighter featured, among other things, a speed-networking session between employers and students, an expert panel, a workshop on peer help and suicide, and live music and dance performances by students in the college's music and dance programs.
