A Scholarship in Memory of Dr. Razgar Rahimi

Over the past 20 months, Centennial – like every education institution around the world – has been focused on supporting the critical needs of our students, staff, and faculty as we navigate the tremendous disruptions created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

But we must not forget – and we have not forgotten – that just before the pandemic took hold, our Centennial community was impacted by another tragedy.

On January 8, 2020, Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 was struck by a missile shortly after takeoff. Among the 176 passengers and crew who died that day were 63 Canadians – including a member of the Centennial College community.

Dr. Razgar Rahimi, a beloved faculty member with Centennial’s School of Engineering Technology and Applied Science (SETAS), was killed in the tragedy along with his wife, Farideh, and their toddler son, Jiwan. Razgar and Farideh were expecting their second child in May of last year.

Razgar’s loss continues to be felt profoundly here at Centennial. A valued mentor, gifted teacher, devoted husband and father and wonderful friend, his death has left an unfillable void for all those who knew him and within Canada’s broader academic community.

At the time of Razgar’s death and in the months since, many have asked what they can do to help honour Razgar’s memory.

The honour Dr. Rahimi’s life the Electrical Engineering Program Advisory Committee has created the Dr. Razgar Rahimi Scholarship Fund. This scholarship in his name to support the academic goals of a full-time student enrolled in as Electrical Engineering program in need of financial support.

The goal is to raise $25,000 to create an endowment so that the scholarship can be given out in perpetuity.
