Create a Cover Letter
In today’s competitive job market, employers will compare your resume to many other people to determine whom they will interview. On average, the initial resume review is done in 30 seconds, so it’s important that you include only the most important information to the employer.
Your Cover Letter
Your cover letter gives you the opportunity to personalize your application. Always address your cover letter to a particular person and tailor it to a specific company and job. This will personalize your letter and show you’ve done your research. You should always send a cover letter, even if the posting only asks for a resume. It shows your professionalism and increases your chances when applying to advertised jobs.
Length - Your cover letter should be no longer than a page.
Review - Give it to three friends or family members to review and edit.
Paragraphs - The cover letter should contain four paragraphs, each with its own purpose.
It should follow the AIDA formula:
A is for Attention: Tell the employer why you are writing. Name the position for which you’re applying and how you heard about it (contact name/where posted/when posted).
I is for Interest: Tell the employer how your skills match those needed for the job.
D is for Desire: You may want to add a paragraph outlining why you would like to do this job. Mention something you have learned about the company during your research. This is your chance to show the employer your interest in the company and that you have done your homework.
A is for Assertiveness: Use an appropriate closing to pave the way for an interview by suggesting a meeting to further discuss your qualifications.
