Four reasons to become self-employed

If you've got a business idea, and want to leave the corporate world behind to make it happen, entrepreneurship is the path for you. Centennial College can make that happen with our part-time business programs, including Small Business Management, which teaches you the basics of marketing, managing and executing the operations of your own business. There’s a lot that’s been written about the reasons for self-employment, and we looked at publications like Forbes, Chron and Wise Bread to see what the most common themes are. Here’s the advantages to running your own small business and being self-employed:

1) A flexible schedule

As an entrepreneur, you’ll be busy, and running your own business is no joke. However, where and when you do your work is entirely up to you, and doesn’t automatically have to be in a 9-to-5 role. Sleep in, get up early, stay up late, go to bed at 9, so long as the work is done, when it happens doesn’t matter. Naturally, you need to be disciplined and able to take initiative for this to work.

2) Control over what you do

If you like simply getting tasks accomplished, and want to end the red-tape and micromanagement that sometimes comes with an office job, self-employment is an end to it. Your ideas, your project and your workflow are now yours to decide, and don’t need to be cleared by anyone. If you’re the type that makes decisions quickly and with confidence, you’ll do well in this position.

3) You can work from home

While you can choose to work in an office space, it’s also possible to run your business from the comfort of your home. Think of it: No more rush-hour traffic, no more formal office wear every day (unless you need to go meet clients), just you working in a space that’s comfortable and familiar to you.

4) Freedom to pursue your passion

All you need is an idea, and a plan to make it happen, after all. Self-employment is all about enthusiasm, and if it’s something you really want to do, that enthusiasm will sustain you. As for the necessary skills, that’s where we come in. Our program will teach you the skills needed to make business dreams come true, including marketing and developing your ideas into business plans.
