Photography students contribute to Canada COVID Portrait

Like every program at Centennial, our Photography classes had to pivot when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared last year. For Tobi Asmoucha, the professional photographer and faculty member who teaches photojournalism, the Life During Covid project became the class’s assignment out of necessity, since the lockdown restricted students’ ability to interact with their subjects. It only made sense for the students to focus on the biggest story of their time. Their photojournalism assignment would produce stunning results that would earn the students that took part official recognition by the Canada COVID Portrait, a non-profit dedicated to documenting the lives of Canadians during the pandemic. The gallery of selected images would go on to be featured on the project’s Instagram page, and the students’ work advances the growing reputation of Centennial’s Photography program. Let’s mark International Development Week, February 9-11

Join us in celebrating International Development Week, an annual event organized by faculty member Vida Shaheda and her students in the International Development post-graduate certificate program. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed inequities around the world, especially for many vulnerable groups and communities. This year’s virtual event includes interactive discussions on crucial development issues, with speakers from different development organizations with diverse viewpoints and backgrounds. The event, aptly themed, “Inclusive Recovery: Advancing Change through Equality and Empowerment,” will be held from February 9 to 11. It’s open to all students, staff and broader community. Centennial showcases local Black businesses

As part of our Black History Month activities, Centennial College is promoting its Black Business Showcase throughout the month of February. Featuring more than 40 Black-owned businesses in fashion, food, art and more, the Showcase offers multiple ways to engage with and support the innovative work of Black entrepreneurs in the Toronto area. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Centennial has encouraged the community through social media campaigns (#CCSupportsLocal) to support local businesses as they navigate the ups and downs of necessary health precautions during these unprecedented times. The College is literally showcasing Black businesses in its Instagram story ever Monday, allowing Instagram followers to swipe up to the business websites. Check it out!

Calling all aspiring authors to the Writing Circle

Centennial is filled with aspiring writers who wish to hone their craft. The Writing Circle meets on a bi-weekly basis and provides an opportunity for writers at all levels to connect using Zoom and write together in small groups. The next meeting is this Friday, February 5 from 1 to 2:30 pm. Writers will use the time to expand on their ideas and literary works, share best practices and get tips and ideas about manuscript publication. Participants are encouraged to come prepared with ideas related to their novel, book, article, poetry or blog they have been meaning to write or have been working on. While other writers will be available to bounce off ideas, this time is primarily designed for participants to put pen to paper. For more details, please watch the attached video or contact Gosha at
