February Festival of Food celebrates Scarborough eateries
Centennial’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts is working with the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) and the City of Toronto on a community project called “Find Dining” to support the success of local restaurants. FindDining.ca will be a made-in-Scarborough solution to celebrate one of the most diverse food communities in Toronto. The website will function as a hub for east-end residents and visitors to connect with independent restaurants, and will focus on sharing the unique stories of these businesses with the goal to increase customer traffic. The program is supported financially by the City of Toronto and is executed in partnership with UTSC and Centennial College through the integration of student research projects and Work Integrated Learning. As part of the collaboration, Centennial community members and friends are invited to join the Scarborough Business Association's February Festival of Food online this Friday, February 12 from 10:30 to 11:45 am. Hear from local food service experts about the innovative ways they're adapting to the new normal and how you can celebrate every day with scrumptious meals prepared by Scarborough eateries.
Centennial’s ELL program audit a positive assessment
The Languages Canada Quality Assurance audit examined Centennial’s English Language Learning (ELL) program recently and provided a positive assessment. ELL provides non-credit English language learning programming for international students who are interested in pursuing post-secondary education in Canada. The report, dated February 5, noted six program areas of particular strength: orientation, support systems, cross-cultural awareness, professional development, academic resources and recruiting. ELL students have access to all Centennial support services, even though the program is not one of the college’s funded post-secondary programs. Five levels are offered from Beginner to Advanced, with successful completion of the 5th level leading to direct placement in introductory Communications courses at Centennial. Since March 2020 the program has pivoted to online learning, and in Winter 2021 four out of the five levels are running with a mix of synchronous and asynchronous instruction. Ministry review of employment services scores well
Centennial College demonstrates sound assessment practices and processes in delivering its Community Employment Services program, this according to the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development’s monitoring process that was recently completed. The assessment pertains to Centennial’s Community Employment Services location at 1163 Ellesmere Road near Midland Ave. Our community-facing facility is contracted to serve community members, in addition to Centennial alumni, leading them towards employment, apprenticeship re-training, upgrading or post-secondary programs. Based on the Ministry’s Detailed Service Quality report dated January 18, Centennial exceeded customer satisfaction benchmarks by 7 per cent and service coordination by 17 per cent. Centennial performed 7 per cent above its service quality standard performance target with a score of 5.81. Centennial moved early to pivot services in light of the pandemic by addressing service challenges and delivering employment services remotely.

SaGE awarded CICan funding for two innovation projects
Last October, International Education’s Services and Global Experience (SaGE) submitted two proposals to the Outbound Student Mobility Pilot Program – Innovation Fund offered by Colleges and Institutes Canada. CICan received 70 funding requests from 47 institutions across Canada, yet, happily, both of Centennial’s proposals were selected to receive $25,000 each. The initiatives are designed to use innovation to fill a needs gap at the College. The Creating Accessible Global Experiences & Universal Design project will expand our suite of virtual programs and hybrid experiences with the purpose of providing accessible employment and international educational experiences for all student groups, particularly students with disabilities. This will be done by training staff and faculty to develop programming for virtual delivery with a focus on understanding the accessible features of new virtual technologies, and creating accessible global experiences using Universal Design in Learning.
The Redesigning The Global Experience Re-Entry Program: A Tool For Leveraging Global Competencies program involves a review of our re-entry materials to develop a comprehensive program that goes beyond the initial stages of re-entry to transform participants into global leaders that can make lasting contributions in their careers and communities. This will be done by addressing immediate “re-entry” needs such as reverse culture shock and wellness. The program will also offer tangible opportunities to contribute to further research and other mediums of knowledge sharing in their respective academic areas of interest, and articulate their international experiences when engaging with peers, employers and professional organizations.
ICT Workshop can resolve your computer issues
The ICT Workshop in the School of Engineering Technology and Applied Science can repair the personal computers of Centennial faculty, staff and students along with upgrades and new software installations. Customers only pay for components and college discounted software, if needed, but the work is provided free. Please note that due to the pandemic, only online support is offered at the present time, and services do not apply to business-owned IT devices. Students enrolled in the Computer Repair and Maintenance Project (CNET-290) class provide the service in an effort to emulate a client-oriented business. You can help to provide this valuable experience and benefit from the free service that the ICT Workshop students are keen to offer. Between now and March 31, these students can help you resolve problems with your computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, printers, scanners and more.
