Rotary Club of Scarborough Charitable Foundation funds entrance scholarships

The Rotary Club of Scarborough Charitable Foundation has generously made a pledge of $100,000 to Centennial College to create an endowment that will finance ongoing scholarships or other financial supports for students residing in a Scarborough neighborhood or entering Centennial from a Scarborough high school. Foundation President Gerard Baribeau presented a cheque for $50,000 to Dr. Craig Stephenson on June 8 as the first payment on the pledge. The Charitable Foundation’s lifelong investment in students embarking on the next stage of their life journey is particularly noteworthy because it will fund entrance scholarships, which are in high demand.

Recognizing Centennial’s anchor role in the local community, the Rotary Club of Scarborough has been providing scholarships to Centennial students for many years. This new gift is a result of a long history of partnership between The Rotary Club of Scarborough and Centennial, most recently exemplified by the Scarborough Ribfest that was successfully hosted at Progress Campus last September. Rotary Club representatives taking part in the cheque presentation on Tuesday included Gerard Baribeau (pictured with cheque), Centennial Board of Governor and Rotarian Michael Cooksey, along with John Barrett, Skip Sears, Donna Worden, Eugene Burns and Marcy Tomassini.

Here’s some more good news about supporting students

Centennial’s Office of Development and Alumni Engagement (ODAE) continues to see success in establishing new scholarships and bursaries. Just confirmed is $15,000 in scholarships for the School of Communications, Media, Arts and Design. The East FM 102.7 Music Scholarships will support two students enrolled in either the Music Industry and Performance program or Performing Arts Fundamentals program annually. The first scholarships may be awarded as early as this fall. And the Ben March Memorial Scholarship endowment, valued at $25,000, will fund an annual $1,000 scholarship award in perpetuity to a student enrolled in the first semester of our Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training program who demonstrates financial need. The endowment, established by the VanderElst/Datti Family, honours the memory of Centennial College Pre-Service Firefighter student Ben March, who passed away earlier this year.
