A-Block expansion construction well underway
Despite the pandemic, our A-Block expansion project at Progress Campus has been moving ahead over the past year with the removal of the pedestrian bridge and exterior facades on the northwest face of the existing building, along with the triangular atrium structure. Design work is finalized and the construction permits initiated with the City of Toronto are nearing completion. Underground services were rerouted around the new foundations and a high-voltage electrical service and transformer were installed by Toronto Hydro.
The former administration offices on the second floor were gutted and are being converted to new classrooms, labs and a Multi-Faith Prayer room. The offices have been moved to nearby leased space at 325 Milner Avenue, the former Yellow Pages building. If you look at the live webcam today you’ll see our construction crews have started excavation for the addition’s footings. A tower crane is now on site, which will be used to put up the mass timbers (the addition is a multi-storey wooden structure). We encourage you to revisit the webcam from time to time to see our A-Block expansion build in real time. Take your MA in Education at Progress Campus
Join a cohort of your peers this fall taking the Central Michigan University (CMU) Master of Arts in Education with a Community College Concentration. The MAE-CC focuses on the Ontario College system, offering three areas of emphasis: Administration/Student Affairs, College Teaching, and Training and Development. Proud graduate Phil Semple Ph.D.(c) and Coordinator of Centennial’s Police Foundations program, found it to be “my favourite personal academic experience… I learned things on the weekend and was applying them the following Monday in class.”
Through our partnership, program registrants are eligible to receive a 15% tuition discount. Additionally, those who have completed Centennial’s Teaching and Learning in Higher Education certificate are eligible to receive two course credits toward program completion. The first intake will begin with courses running online. Subsequent delivery onsite is subject to provincial, Public Health and Centennial Institutional Guidelines and Procedures. Centennial’s Great Global Cleanup gets results
Sustainability at Centennial celebrated Earth Week’s theme Restore Our Earth by kicking off the virtual Great Global Cleanup with our College community. During the month of April, some 55 kg of litter was recovered from parkland in more than 10 communities across the Greater Toronto Area. We also held a draw for all our volunteers who participated and James Duncan, an Environmental Technology student (pictured) with the School of Engineering Technology and Applied Science, won a zero-waste prize pack.
“From talking with people who saw me picking up garbage, they were enthusiastic that something was being done about it. I hope I inspired them to clean up a park, as well,” James remarked about his experience. Even though our official competition is over, in the words of James you can still make a difference by conducting a cleanup in your neighborhood or local park, inspiring others to do the same. Second edition of COMM Dialogues is now out
Would you like to read a colleague's tips on teaching the essay? How about some poetry to soothe your pandemic woes? The editorial team of COMM Dialogues and the Department of English invite you to peruse the second edition of COMM Dialogues, The Journal of the Department of English. It features non-fiction and fiction written by our English faculty, along with content related to pedagogy, technology, research and literature. If you've missed the first edition of the journal, you can access that too by clicking on "Archive" on the left side of the home screen. Sports Journalism students experience Florida virtually
Every year, our Sports Journalism students travel to Florida to cover various stories, including Blue Jays spring training, NCAA sports, golf and more. However, with the pandemic this year that was no longer an option, so students instead had the opportunity to flex their journalistic abilities in a slightly different way. Instructor Malcolm Kelly divided his class of 38 graduate certificate students into four groups to cover Swimming Canada, Wheelchair Basketball Canada, South Florida Bull women’s softball and the University of Tampa Spartan competitions virtually. Each student had one-on-one Zoom interviews, and wrote an accompanying story, along with a photo provided by the teams. Not only did their work get published on Centennial’s own Toronto Observer website, but many stories were featured on the websites of the various sports organizations in Canada and the U.S. The virtual Florida experience was a resounding success.
