Program Overview

This advanced diploma in Health Informatics Technology will incorporate knowledge of both information technology and healthcare systems. The skills acquired by the graduates will enable them to design, develop, modify, and test software for healthcare applications.

As a graduate from this program, you will be able to analyze and model data, develop healthcare databases and apply different computer medical-imaging techniques. You will also use tools, algorithms and health informatics methods for hospitals, schools, health care agencies, and public health departments.

The coursework will emphasize object-oriented software design methodologies, user-oriented interface design, structure of healthcare information systems, telehealth, data security and privacy in health care systems. It will also focus on technologies such as C#, Java, J2EE, Oracle, MS-SQL Server, Unix/ Linux, Microsoft’s .NET, HTML/ XML, Rational/ WebSphere, Data warehousing and Data mining, and BI tools in health care systems and more.

To underscore the applied focus of the curriculum, the program will include two software development projects in the field of health informatics. These real world business applications will require you to utilize all the technical, systems, and business skills gained during your studies. Another option in obtaining hands-on experience is through the program’s optional co-op component. Academically-qualified students enhance their education by working three terms as paid employees in the field. The experience not only allows you to put classroom learning into practice, but also provides valuable contacts for future careers.

Accelerated Specialization

The program offers a second entry point, in the fifth semester, for graduates of computer programmer/ analyst diploma programs or for those who have finished a similar education from other institutions.

The Computer Programmer/ Analyst program is a fully CIPS accredited program. The new HIT program is a superset of the former CPA program and will go through the CIPS accreditation process with the first HIT graduates in 2010.
