Our team offers a comprehensive range of resources and services to support faculty in all aspects of course design and development. Whether you are interested in designing a course from the ground up, redesigning and existing course, or enhancing specific course elements, we provide tailored support through consultation (e.g., offering expert advice on curriculum design, assessments, course alignment, and effective use of technology) and course construction services (e.g., developing interactivities, videos, graphics, and integration within Luminate).
Specifically, our team specializes in:
- Course Modality Planning: Helping faculty assess situational factors to determine the most suitable modality (e.g., face-to-face, hybrid, online, or hyflex) for their course.
- Integrated Course Design: Supporting a holistic approach to course (re)design, ensuring alignment between learning outcomes, assessments, and activities.
- Course Organization and Navigation: Recommending effective models and strategies for organizing course content and delivery in online environments.
- Online Presence and Engagement: Demonstrating strategies to build a strong social presence and humanize online learning experiences.
- Engaging Course Materials: Assisting in retooling or converting existing course materials into dynamic, engaging content for various modalities.
- Effective Teaching Strategies: Advising on techniques like the flipped classroom to enhance learning in both hybrid and online synchronous settings.
- Educational Technology Integration: Recommending and integrating educational technology tools to enhance learning experiences in the online environment.
- Interactive Media Creation: Offering expertise in creating engaging media elements such as videos, animations, and interactive graphics to meet students’ learning needs.
- Quality Assurance: Providing thorough evaluations using the Quality Matters (QM©) framework to uphold high standards courses with any online elements.
IDD Workshops and Faculty Resources
The following is our recurring workshops that address all aspects of course design and delivery. Faculty are encouraged to attend these sessions (refer to the CFDTI “Compendium” for a specific schedule of workshops).
Workshops
Title | Description |
---|---|
How to Plan Your Course | In this session you will be introduced to a systematic process (i.e., integrated design) for designing courses and be directed towards resources at Centennial that can help facilitate this process. |
Designing Courses to Quality Matters (QM) | In this session you will be introduced to the Quality Matters© framework of course design (i.e., a systematic framework that identifies forty-two standards of best practice for online courses) and be directed towards Centennial-based resources that can assist faculty in creating “Quality” online courses. |
Orienting Students to your Online/Hybrid Course | Providing an online orientation to your course is integral to a student’s success in it. This workshop will highlight the elements that should be present in an online student orientation by showcasing Centennial’s “pre-populated” course orientation that can be uploaded into your Luminate shell. |
Structuring and Planning your Online, Hybrid, or Hyflex Lessons | Learn how to appropriately plan and structure your online, hybrid, or hyflex lessons by adopting the "Jumpstart” model. The model promotes several “best-practice" strategies including contextualization, personalization, relevance, “chunking”, active learning, and reflection. |
Designing Accessible Online and Hybrid Courses | This session highlights the legal and ethical responsibilities associated with the creation of online and hybrid courses at Centennial. Not only must such courses satisfy requirements set out by the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), but developing accessible courses also provides a more equitable and improved learning experience for all students. Strategies and resources for creating accessible courses will be explored. |
Promoting Academic Honesty in Online Courses | During this session, we will highlight the reasons why students act in an academically dishonest fashion, distinguish between different types of academically dishonest behaviour, and discuss strategies that can be implemented across the curriculum (content and assessments) in your online courses in order to promote academic honesty. |
Tips to Counter Contract Cheating | During this session, we will define contract cheating, highlight some of its providers, note how it may impact your course, and suggest course design tips that will minimize its negative impact. |
