Keynote Speaker
Prof. Wendell Nii Laryea Adjetey (Nii Laryea Osabu I, Atrékor Wé Oblahii kè Oblayéé Mantsè) is William Dawson Associate Professor and specialist in post-Reconstruction U.S. and African Diaspora history at McGill University. He is the author of the critically acclaimed book, Cross-Border Cosmopolitans: The Making of a Pan-African North America (UNC Press, 2023), which has received multiple awards and distinctions. It earned the 2024 Governor General's History Award for Scholarly research, marking the first time that a Black and visibly non-white professor has won this prize.
Dr. Adjetey is the back-to-back recipient of McGill University's two teaching commendations: 2023 President's Prize for Excellence in Teaching, and 2022 H. Noel Fieldhouse Award for Distinguished Teaching. Before pursuing an academic career, Dr. Adjetey worked in youth gang prevention and intervention in north Toronto. Dr. Adjetey obtained his Ph.D. from Yale University and did his post-doctoral studies at Harvard University.
