What would it be like to not have who you are constantly called into question? To, without effort, be perceived as correct and valid? As a mixed-race woman, I am an ally to those who have been made to hide who they really are, as well as those who have had the courage to free themselves of judgement and society’s norms. I have played both of these roles in my lifetime. It took me some time to define who I am and learn how important it is for everyone to go through this world and this life as their true authentic selves. Now, as a mother, I want my children to learn this a lot sooner than I did, and being an ally helps them to grow up knowing that they can be whoever and whatever they want to be.
