John Caffery

Program Coordinator and Professor, Arts Education and Community Engagement

When I was a child, it seemed that everyone at my elementary school thought I was gay, long before I had any understanding of my own sexuality, I was teased and bullied regularly for my femininity. As I progressed into high school, the bullying worsened, and it negatively impacted my ability to succeed academically as I would skip classes to avoid harassment. Schools are often the site of homophobic, transphobic, and biphobic violence. As a queer parent and an educator, I’m deeply invested in working with schools to ensure that people in the 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities know they belong, that the curriculum and policies are inclusive, and that the brilliant diversity in our communities is protected and celebrated.
