When I was 13 years old, I came out to my mom by writing vigorously on a whiteboard and showing her YouTube videos that explained what it meant to be gender non-conforming. She didn't know what it meant at the time, but she didn't need to understand everything to know that she loved me. When I attended church in young adulthood, I was told that I couldn't exist authentically and be loved unconditionally at the same time.
Visibility and diversity are important, especially in a world where no one feels like they belong. Coming out, for me, will be a lifelong process. Thankfully, I've finally surrounded myself with others that make me feel proud, not ashamed, of who I am.
