The assumption that heterosexuality is the default sexuality hinders self-discovery. Growing up, I had never considered myself to be anything but straight because that’s what society- teachers, my parents, and the rest of my family- assumed I was. It took me until the age of fifteen to even consider I may be queer, and even longer to fully accept it as part of my identity. I spent so much of my life not knowing all of who I was; going forward, I hope these assumptions are dispelled, and children aren’t raised with only one identity in mind.
