As a kid, I didn’t think much about sexuality or gender. They weren’t even on my radar. But as I grew up, they became central to who I am. In Ecuador, with its conservative views, I was quickly placed into a predetermined spot, expected to fit perfectly into a puzzle. But what if my piece didn’t fit?

I felt like a puzzle piece that didn’t belong, no matter how hard I tried. So, I trimmed parts of myself to fit in, hoping that maybe then, I’d be loved and accepted. And for years, I went along with it.

When I visited my Canadian family each summer, I saw a different world. In Canada, puzzles came in all shapes, sizes, and colors. I realized that you didn’t have to fit into just one place or be part of one specific picture. You could belong in many, or even create a new one for yourself.

I no longer see myself as a puzzle piece that I need to solve or force into place. Instead, I now see myself as a complete picture—whole and enough, just as I am. My journey isn’t about fitting into someone else’s design. My puzzle piece is its own complete puzzle, perfect as it is.

Now, I know it’s never too late to discover who you really are. Self-discovery is a lifelong journey, free from labels, peer pressure, or stereotypes. If I could tell my younger self anything, it would be this: Your identity isn’t a race to the finish line. It’s a beautiful experience, full of small victories and unexpected joys. Savor every moment.

Your journey isn’t about finding where you fit, but discovering that you’re already enough.
