Growing up in Uganda, I faced significant challenges due to the stigma surrounding being gay or bisexual, as well as the harsh penalties that can go with it. For a long time, I struggled to express my identity, often hesitating to say, “I am bisexual.” The fear of rejection and discrimination, compounded by the difficult environment I was in, made it hard for me to fully embrace who I am.
As a university student leader back in Uganda, I wanted to advocate for the freedom and rights of others, but I often felt disconnected and diminished in comparison to my peers. However, I am incredibly grateful to now be in a space and country where acceptance and understanding are possible. I have moved beyond fear and shame, standing proudly in my truth.
I recognize that I am worthy of love, respect, and acceptance. My journey, although tough, has strengthened me, and I committed to living authentically and courageously. We have one life to live, and it is vital that we stay true to ourselves. Each of us has the power to define our happiness on our terms.
Remember, your appreciated and loved just as you are, and you deserve to live without fear.
