Growing up in a conservative community profoundly shapes one's perspective, especially of oneself. This was at the core of my struggle during my early teen years. I always felt out of place in traditional crowds, where conformity was expected. Dealing with barriers to my gender expression was particularly challenging.
Fortunately, I had an early realization that I was somewhat different but still normal like everyone else, and this has influenced my outlook on life. I remember having to explain to my family that who I love doesn't make me possessed or abnormal. While they sometimes still struggle to understand, I've embraced the paradox of my life and intersections.
Being free to express myself and actively participating in the LGBTQ+ community, taking up space, and raising my voice for those with similar experiences brings me immense satisfaction and drives me to do more. That's why I'm thrilled to have this community here at Centennial College.
I believe there's no greater relief than being yourself and confidently expressing yourself genuinely.
