Jason Colthrust is a 3D Generalist and Unreal Authorized Instructor.
A few months before graduating from the Game Design & Development program at Centennial College in 2007, Jason launched his 3D career as a Texture Artist outside of the games industry. He landed a position at Switch VFX, where he worked on props and environments to be used in Twisted Pictures/Lionsgate films. After getting a small taste of creating 3D assets for Hollywood, Jason wanted to expand his knowledge of the visual effects pipeline. This led to him enrolling in the Visual Effects for Film & Television program at Seneca College.
After graduating from Seneca, Jason worked at MPC Toronto (formerly Mr. X) as an Asset Artist. He expressed an interest in photogrammetry and was given the opportunity to help shape the studio’s 3D scanning pipeline. During his time at MPC, he processed all incoming photo scans of actors and laser scans of environments, while also modeling, texturing and shading 3D props, environments and characters for various projects. Some notable credits include “Vikings Valhalla” (Emmy nominated episode “The Bridge” - Best Visual Effects, 2022), “Halo” (Paramount+ TV series), “Snowpiercer” (TNT/Netflix) and “American Gods” (Amazon Prime Video).
Jason’s experience in the VFX industry along with his unique skillset/education in the game development pipeline caught the attention of Canada’s largest independent game development studio, Behavior Interactive, who was in the process of building a cinematics team. He was brought in as a Senior 3D Artist and worked on various game projects across the studio including “Dead by Daylight”, “Jurassic World: Primal Ops” and “Meet Your Maker”.
Aside from studio work, Jason has been teaching at Centennial College for over 15 years. His classes focus on game-ready 3D modeling using Maya and ZBrush, texturing with Substance 3D Painter/Designer, material editing/look development and level construction in Unreal Engine.
