Mary Vallis is a Professor of Journalism at Centennial College, where she guides post-graduate and undergraduate college students and university students from UTSC as they explore multimedia storytelling and journalism. Before joining Centennial, Mary was Life editor for the Toronto Star. She was previously the newspaper’s Canada editor, deputy city editor and senior editor of digital news. She also chaired the Star’s Trust Project. Her career includes 10 years at National Post where she covered stories in Canada and the U.S. and won several awards including a National Newspaper Award for breaking news coverage of the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007. Mary, who has taught journalism at Rwanda’s national university through the Rwanda Initiative in 2008, was a founding member of the National NewsMedia Council and a former member of the Ontario Press Council.
