Dr. Mahbub Hasan

Professor, Social Service Worker Program

Dr. Mahbub Hasan is a registered social worker, an award-winning educator, and a passionate international development worker with 10 years of experience in teaching, curriculum development, and leading experiential learning in the higher education sector in Ontario. He has been teaching at the School of Community and Health Studies at Centennial College since 2013. Professor Hasan received the Internationalization Excellence Award in 2018 for the Faculty Led International Program in the Dominican Republic and the President’s Spirit Award in 2019 for Applied Research on Manitoulin Island from Centennial College. 
 
Hasan, a lifelong learner, pursued Social Work (BSW and MSW) at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). Additionally, he earned a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Dhaka. Hasan also holds certificates in Project Management and Communications from the University of Toronto (UofT). Furthermore, he was a Fellow of the Jack Layton Leadership School at TMU. 

With 25 years of experience in community development, social service administration, project management, program coordination, and fundraising in Canada and Asia, Dr. Hasan worked with the UofT, TMU, ActionAid International, and Global Affairs Canada. He works to empower students and transform the lives of newcomers and youth from marginalized communities worldwide. 

His research interests include anti-racism, affordable housing, livelihoods, community journalism, civil resistance, and social movements. He has published books, articles, and blogs in these fields. Additionally, he hosts "Podcasting Social Work," a global platform for learning, sharing, and activism.  

In 2015, Hasan won the International Centre on Nonviolent Conflict Fellowship (ICNC USA) for developing a curriculum on civil resistance. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of Regent Park Arts – Daniels Spectrum from 2012 to 2020 and as a Community Impact Advisor for United Way Greater Toronto from 2015 to 2019. Currently, Dr. Hasan volunteers as a Program Advisor at Bangladeshi Canadian Community Services, supporting initiatives centered around gender equality, youth leadership, and anti-racism.
