As a person with a permanent hearing disability, my disability has played a significant role in shaping my identity; particularly in terms of my communication, social interactions, education and relationships with others. Oftentimes, I have felt isolated or excluded from conversations or activities that rely heavily on spoken language. However, I have always found strength and pride in my identity by believing in myself and by maintaining a strong support system around me. As part of the Centennial College family, rather than feeling isolated or excluded at work, I have felt a strong sense of support from my colleagues and the Centennial community. Recently, with virtual team meetings/virtual communication tools that support closed captioning have provided me immense help. Overall, while a hearing disability can present challenges, it can also contribute to a complex and multifaceted sense of self. To my fellow community members never give up on living a fulfilling life and achieving your dreams.
