I have had the privilege of working at Centennial for half of my life. Just before I started my teaching career, I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Looking back, knowing what I have learned, my journey with anxiety began when I started school at age four. Being terribly anxious led to morbid shyness, embarrassing physical symptoms, and perfectionism as a student, then fear of making mistakes as a teacher and employee. Interestingly, speaking in front of students came naturally but, even now, at meetings my heart is thumping quickly before I speak! I've added four inapparent and episodic physical disabilities to my cache since childhood. The best part of having several inapparent and episodic disabilities is that I have a whole pile of lived experience and I can share this with my students, empathize with them and advocate for them to get the supports they need.
