Looking for a green, eco-aware college? Centennial College is ranked second among Canada’s top-10 colleges offering the most climate- and sustainability-focused courses. This according to Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan), which has released a timely report detailing the roles its member colleges play in addressing climate change and supporting Canada’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
The report – titled Are We Ready? – documents college and institute leadership in climate action across three areas: Curriculum, Applied Research and Community Engagement, and Campus Infrastructure and Indigenous Approaches to Sustainability. The CICan report highlights Centennial’s considerable achievements in two of the three areas.
Centennial is ranked number two among Canada’s top colleges offering climate-focused curricula, with only the British Columbia Institute of Technology delivering more courses. The study undertook a review of course offerings at colleges and institutes across Canada, with the research complemented by focus groups and interviews with diverse groups.
Under Campus Infrastructure, the report dedicated a full page to Centennial’s A-Block Expansion project at Progress Campus. CICan described the new addition, which will open in the fall of 2023, as “the first mass timber, zero carbon, post-secondary educational facility in the country.” Designed by DIALOG and Smoke Architecture, the building is inspired by the Indigenous concept of “Two-eyed Seeing.”
CICan recognizes that climate change is the single largest global challenge of the next decade and likely beyond. The organization of Canada’s colleges, institutes, cégeps and polytechnics regards its report not only as a showcase, but also a resource to inspire more post-secondary leaders to act in the fight to combat climate change.
