Yes. Students with accessibility needs should consider adaptive technologies when they select a device for their BringIT programs. The hardware requirements for each program are based on the software used and the learning outcomes of your field of study.
If your laptop or device meets the minimum hardware requirements and/or can run the software required for your program, then you can use it. You can find this out by checking the minimum recommended hardware specifications for your program under the Technology Requirements section of your program page.
Please note: If you are purchasing a new device, you may want to consider one that exceeds the minimum standards. In some cases, it may be easier – and more cost-effective – to purchase a device that you can keep using outside of your program for many more years.
In some cases, programs have listed minimum hardware (and software) requirements that may be met by a specific type of tablet. In instances where either the program allows for a tablet and/or the minimum hardware and software requirements are met by the tablet, you may be able to use the tablet.
Professors will integrate the use of a mobile technology device when it will enhance the learning experience. The professor may ask you to use a device to learn about and apply course-specific hardware and software tools, or to complete on-demand research, exams and quizzes. You may also be required to participate in collaborative exercises or respond to questions or surveys during class.
The cost of a mobile computing device depends on your program’s minimum hardware requirements. To estimate the cost of the device you’ll need, you can check the specifications under the Technology Requirements section of your program page. In addition, if you already own a device that matches your program’s hardware requirements, you’ll have no need to purchase a new one at all.
Most of the software used in Centennial College programs (like Office 365, AutoCAD, and others) is provided to you as part of your college fees, or is cloud-based, or free of cost. However, some programs may have unique software licensing requirements and annual subscriptions which will affect your costs.
You can check your specific program page’s Technology Requirements for a listing of required software.
Please refer to the Technology Requirements section of your program page for any specific accessories that may be required for your particular program. For instance, you may be required to purchase earphones so that you can use your device without disturbing others, or a headset/microphone combination that allows you to participate in online sessions and/or remote collaboration with your peers.

Most laptops are covered under their manufacturer’s warranty for a limited time. While Centennial’s Information Technology (IT) department can assist you with issues related to myCentennial or eCentennial login, they cannot provide hardware or configuration support. By doing so, they may breach your manufacturer’s warranty. You may wish to purchase an extended warranty along with any new device/laptop, when possible.
It is your responsibility to make sure your computer is in good working order and available for use during classes. In the event of an unforeseen circumstance where your device is not available to you, Centennial offers a short-term laptop loan through the Libraries. You must present your valid student ID card before you can check out a loaner laptop for up to four hours.
In order to help with the costs of purchasing a laptop or device, Centennial College will be re-launching the BringIT bursary, beginning with the 2023-24 academic year. 100 students who qualify will be awarded the bursary for each semester, and will receive $500 to put towards the hardware or software they need. Note that students who have participated and awarded the bursary in the Fall semester will not be allowed to participate again in the Winter semester, and that not every program or school will be participating in the bursary.
It’s also possible to qualify for a range of other scholarships and bursaries at Centennial College, in order to make school more affordable. After we have supplied you with your fee statement for the fall (September to December) semester, you can check your myCentennial email account for a message containing a link to the College's Scholarships and Bursaries Finder. Based on your responses to this questionnaire, we will automatically invite you to apply for this and any other bursaries or scholarships for which you may qualify. Review all of the College’s bursaries.
Additionally, note that if you already own a laptop or device that meets the minimum hardware requirements and/or can run the software required for your program, then you can opt to use that, with no need to purchase a new device. You can find out if a current device is eligible by checking the minimum recommended hardware specifications for your program under the Technology Requirements section of your program page.
