Description | This course provides a historical overview of 20th-century visual culture, including its origins and relationships on the media cultures of the 21st century. Visual culture deals with both artworks, such as those found in museums, and broader forms of popular culture, such as film, television, gaming, advertising, news media, and the internet. In each of these sight-based dimensions, fundamental dimensions of society, such as race, gender, ethics and sexuality, are publicly negotiated, rehearsed, and reinforced. Questions regarding key issues in contemporary visual culture will be addressed by exploring approaches to and crossings between diverse media and their expression in local, regional, and global cultures. Coursework will provide opportunities for experimental and collaborative forms of interactivity. |
