Advocacy is an important strategy for improving the well-being of children.  Child & Youth Workers work with children who are in trouble, vulnerable and usually with a traumatic history.  Child & Youth Workers need to ensure that the rights of all children need to be protected.

This course will focus on the major pieces of: advocacy; current protective legislation; youth justice; children’s rights; the rights of children in care; laws that govern Children’s Mental Health; laws that govern the Education Act; and other current issues that govern our profession.  An overview of the Canadian political structure will be provided to enable the student to understand such issues as funding, Ministerial responsibility, and levels of government.

Minimum C grade. Pre-requisites: Semester 1 & Semester 2 CYWP courses.
