Description | For professionals in the human services field, one of the primary “tools of the trade” is the ability to relate to and communicate with people. Since communication is the foundation of the community service work practice, students will learn the roots of how and why they communicate and deconstruct and build healthier, more mindful communication patterns. Students will become aware of their present ways of communicating and build on the communication skills they have already established. Students will examine the cognitive activities that shape communication, explore the elements and process of communication, become aware of the dynamics of relational communication, and practice the skills of effective communication, as well as conflict resolution strategies. Students will study the communication patterns and responses of others and themselves while working in a dynamic and multicultural work environment within the community service or child studies sectors. Experiential and reflective approaches will be used to assist in learning. |
