| Description | This course introduces students to the practices of museum collections care and handling through lectures, discussion, guest speakers, field trips and hands-on activities. Basic conservation and museum environmental concerns, storage and handling of different categories of material will be covered. Risk assessment, especially as it relates to care of collections, will also be covered. Care and handling of collections to be exhibited will also be further discussed in the Design course. This course complements the course Museum Collections: Collection Management & Curation, which focuses on the assessment and documentation of collections. The ethical and practical standards established by professional associations and the governmental policies guiding the administration of cultural properties offer a framework for our readings and inform the practices in question within professional contexts. Current issues informing the field at large will also be drawn upon. "Museum" is used here as an umbrella term for a broad range of arts and heritage institutions, defined by their focus on collections (tangible or intangible) and a public service orientation. |
